1.

Do I have to be fit/flexible/skinny/young to practice yoga?

No. Yoga is for all bodies. Our yoga practices focus on allowing the yogi to decide what feels best for their body. Our teachers have the skills and experience to be able to offer variations and use of props to help you make the yoga practice fit your body, not the other way around. The live classes are taught to suit the bodies on the mat in the class and our On Demand classes are categorised so that you can choose the practice that suits your body. We come to the yoga mat to honour what the body can do. Your Body, Plus Yoga, is a Yoga Body!

  • Why should I practice with Plus Yoga?
Hi, I'm Nina. I am the founder of Plus Yoga and I teach the classes. I have been practicing yoga since I was about 15 or 16 and I have identified as a fat person since childhood. I used to think that the physical prcatice of yoga was only for those times when I was physically fit and able, that's what messages I got from society, and the yoga world. I worked in the fitness industry, pushing myself to get fitter and 'in shape', and then I started attending a yoga class in one of the gyms I worked at. The teacher was a lovely, older, Indian woman with a beautiful calm energy. Vijaya's 90 minute classes showed me that yoga is for any body and can be adjusted so that it suits what the body needs. This was vital information for me during the next few years when I had to undergo two spinal surgeries. I kept up with my yoga practice through those surgeries and the rehabilitaton, learning my body's cues and needs, learning to connect my mind and breath with my body. I found that I wasn't just healing my physical body. Now, I practice at least once everyday, not always long practices, but always what my mind, body and breath need. So, what does that all mean for your practice? My teaching is about guiding others to find their own practice suitable for their own body. I have a deep understanding that this is different for every body, and every mind. I teach yoga in a way that you will be empowered to make choices for yourself in your practice, you will be able to practice anywhere, anytime - at home, in any class - in a way that supports and enhances your personal practice. I would be honoured to do that for you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions 🙏
  • Do I have to be fit/flexible/skinny/young to practice yoga?
No. Yoga is for all bodies. Our yoga practices focus on allowing the yogi to decide what feels best for their body. Our teachers have the skills and experience to be able to offer variations and use of props to help you make the yoga practice fit your body, not the other way around. The Live Classes are taught to suit the bodies on the mat in the class and our On Demand Video classes are categorised so that you can choose the practice that suits your body in that moment. We come to the yoga mat to honour what the body can do, with kindness. Your Body, Plus Yoga is a Yoga Body! If you have an injury, illness or condition that you will be dealing with during one of our live practices (and you have had advice from your heath professional that it is ok for you to practice) please advise the teacher before the class so that the may help you with variations and props in your practice.
  • Do  have to be spiritual to practice yoga?
No. Yoga is a practice that will meet you where you are. If you want a purely physical practice, yoga will be there for you. If you want to include spirituality in your practice, yoga can be that too. You are free to take what you want and need from our practices.
  • Is yoga a religion?
No. Yoga is the basis for a number of religions, but it is not a religion itself. It is a practice to connect your mind, body and breath. It will not compromise your beliefs. Yoga will allow you to relax and focus on the things that are important to you, whatever they may be. Our Plus Yoga community is very inclusive and welcoming to all beliefs and customs.
  • Should I eat before I practice yoga?
Generally it's recommended that we allow at least 90 minutes after eating before practicing yoga or meditation. The breathing and posture practices in yoga and meditation tend to stimulate and manipulate the digestive and elimination organs which can be uncomfortable on a full stomach. But, having said that, it is your practice and if you know that it will be better for your body to eat something before class please follow the knowledge that you have of your body.
  • Is there any 'diet talk'  in Plus Yoga classes?
No, never. Our classes, in-person, online or on demand are a safe space, welcoming and inclusive to all where you can be free to explore what works for your body, without judgement or the need to compare. We hold this space for you so that you ca practice yoga as an act of self-care.
  • What do I wear to class
Anything that allows your body to move, and that you feel comfortable in, is appropriate to wear to practice yoga. It doesn't need to be a special yoga outfit.
  • How often should I practice?
That is entirely up to you. If you're just starting yoga you might like to start slowly and do one class per week or you might want to jump right on in and try all the different types of classes straight away. Yogis with more experince will have worked out what yoga schedule works best for their bodies, available time, and needs. Also, scheduels and needs change all the time so there's no hard rule about how much your should or shouldn't practice. Yoga will be there for you whenever you come to your mat. If you have a specific goal in mind for your practice you might like to bood a individual session for hel to plan out your yoga journey.
  • What if I can't or don't want to meditate?
Our teachers generally allocate the last 10-15 minutes of each class to 'shavasana' or a comfortable pose that allows your body to relax and absorb all the benefits of the entire practice. During this time you are free to practice meditation or to simply relax and enjoy the stillness. You are completely in control of your practice at all times. If/when you would like to learn how to meditate we have a huge range of meditation videos availble and live weekly Meditation classes which will teach you many different ways of finding your meditation practice. There is always the option of booking an Individual Session to discuss and develop your meditation practice one-on-one with a teacher.
  • What if I don't feel well, can/should I still practice yoga?"
It really depends on what the issue is and whether your body feels like practicing. If you're feeling mildly unwell, our suggestion is to take a few moments to check in with your body and ask yourself if some gentle movement and breathing would help or not and go with your choice. If your choice is to practice, keep checking in with yourself during the practice and stop if you start to feel worse. If you choose not to practice, try not to second guess yourself, give yourself the gift of rest, your practice will be there when you come back to it. We would always advise that, if the issue is ongoing or you feel very unwell, you should speak to your health professional before practicing any yoga. For our in-person practices, please do the right thing by your fellow yogis and stay at home if you feel unwell, especially if you have any covid19 symptoms 🙏
